This is a must-try. I'm away from my audio server, but when I return on Monday I'll give this a go.
-
Nice ads.
-
Yeah Japan loves smoking.
-
It just keeps getting worse.
-
ABANDON SHIP!
-
These are pretty funny...
-
I'd love to see how "simple" this actually is to use. Here's hoping...
-
This is a level-headed summary of why it's ok to continue to use Feedburner, and a recommendation for using the MyBrand service. Do it!
-
One of my favorite posts in a long time, especially the parts about cultural adaptation, the death of mom-and-pop stores.
-
My thoughts exactly, Tim.
-
Yeah, I highlight things on screen as well. I don't know why, it's just a habit. I'm breaking it because I spend a lot of time on NYTimes.com, but I do miss the olden days.

"Vicki Gowler would not rely on Rogers' anonymous sources. Instead, she decided to investigate the widespread rumors that date to 1982, when Craig pre-emptively denied involvement in a gay sex scandal involving congressmen and underage pages."
-
Whoh. Isn't the solution just to devalue U.S. markets? It's odd that the international community is arguing they should have oversight over U.S. markets, rather than just utilizing a market reaction...no?
-
This is a big deal, but not in the sense that Microsoft is responsible. It brings to light a new problem of what happens when a massive number of automated routines "exports" problems across the global network.

Diet Coke is 99% Water (And That Is Now a Good Thing) - Freakonomics - Opinion - New York Times Blog"So, in a world where free water is the benchmark, if you make Diet Coke, you want to hide the fact that it is mostly water with a few cheap extras mixed in. On the other hand, when water is priced the same as soda, that part of the equation falls away."
-
Nice criticism.
-
Well that's one way to do things.
-
Wow.
-
Doesn't get any better than this.
-
Moyers is amazing.
While I was recovering from the long flight back from Japan on Monday, I wandered up to the Apple store to purchase one of those hot new keyboards (= FANTASTIC) and check out iLife 2008. I picked up a copy, imported my photos from the trip, and promptly got tired and left them there.
This morning, I decided to spend 15 minutes before work beginning to review and crop a few photos. I was delighted to learn that iPhoto 2008 is ridiculously fast, efficient, and yes, fun. I ended up getting through a good 30 photos before forcing myself to put down the mouse and head off to work.
iLife 2008 = highly recommend. -
hahahaha

"Shouldn’t the relevant question here be whether the president committed high crimes and misdemeanors—grounds for impeachment under the constitution?" YES!
-
This article doesn't seem to ask whether females are under-reporting, only that males are over-reporting.
-
"These guys say your payment will be $500 a month, but nowhere do they say that your actual payment is $3,000 a month. It should be criminal. The disclosures are usually complicated and people don’t know what hit them." Fantastic quote!

I think he's got bigger problems than his age, but maybe I've been out of touch for too long?
-
YAY for my little sister!!!! What a wonderful letter, Amy!
-
Centrism presumes that people don't have conflicting views. That idea of bi-conceptualism is a powerful one.
-
The new hotness. I love mine already.
-
Yup. Portfolio sucks.
-
This one wins my favorite headline award for Gonzales' depature.
-
"In retrospect, everyone should have been focusing less on how those methods were used to win elections and more on why they couldn’t deliver once the elections were over." It doesn't get summed up better than that.
-
Holy sh*t this is bad. Though if anyone had been paying attention for the past 15-20 years, it's not a surprise. China's been waiting for years to gain this leverage over the U.S.
-
Packard Bell still exists?
-
Not sure I want to have random photos on my work screensaver, but this does look very cool. If I used Windows at home I'd use it.
-
This is a big deal. Consumers are going to start expecting online banking tools that far exceed what banks currently do. I think banks that do an exemplary job in this area can perhaps gain/retain some customers and cut down on acquisition and cs costs.
-
I really hope this building is not as ugly as they originally wanted to make it. Folks, it doesn't match the campus and one day the architecture will look like Maginnes and the other "ugly ducklings" scattered around South Mountain!
-
Another fantastic Frontline report...and great website.
-
These ring true. We should aspire to live up to them.
-
Really good column on the value of taking unexpected twists and turns in your career.
-
I'm getting excited! Kanazawa sounds like a great place to get a good meal.
-
Nara sounds fantastic and is one of the places I'm most looking forward to. My only regret is that it might be relaxing enough that I'll have wanted to stay two days there.
-
From Frommers. A nice intro to Kyoto and a bit about Nara.
-
I want a photo right there. It looks incredible.
-
Note to self- check this out further.
-
Good site. Though obviously I can't say more at this point...
-
"But public service is part of the military ethic, too. And the privatization of military functions is a direct attack on that ethic." Finally!
-
Is the car-standards thing something that can be resolved in conference?
-
This hits home. My handwriting is terrible and almost completely illegible.
-
Yup, gotta make this modification

Yep, Schumer should rethink the hedge fund loophole.
Shampoo? Conditioner? Who Knows

Nancy points out these bottles of Trader Joe's shampoo and conditioner. They're nearly identical, making it very tough to identify which is which.
She's hit on an interesting concept here. In our quest to simplify (one which I work on every day on websites), we can't go so far as to make things indistinguishable. I'd never really thought about why shampoo and conditioner bottles from the same brand were different shapes (or colors), but now I suspect it's because when you've got soap in your eyes, you know which is which.
Usability is trying to identify the balance between simplicity and usefulness. These products went to far and as such are a failure. What about your sites? Products?
Does anything in your life suffer from this problem? What about things that are too complex?

Edwards again with the win! Giuliani is the candidate who should scare us the most for 2008 - not because he's especially strong, but because he'd make one scary president.

See what national healthcare gets you? A national motivation to stay healthy!

"Nothing so well defines a society as its understanding of justice. Of all our core values, this is the most essential."

Updating Newport? Impossible!

"Every year I get paid $588 not to farm it, under the Conservation Reserve Program." An interesting column about what farm subsidies to and who gets paid.
-
"The perennial disagreement in book groups has been over authors, with the single-malt drinkers arguing for F. Scott Fitzgerald and the chardonnay drinkers for Anita Shreve." Nope, nothing about that statement struck close to home for me...nothing at all.

I don't usually post stuff from Slashdot, but WOW. They're replacing six full data centers housing 4,000 servers with 30 "refrigerator-sized" mainframes running Linux.
-
Wow. This is a must-read.
-
Followup to the must-read.

I love hot food, but you couldn't have paid me enough.
